When Rolex introduced this reference at Baselworld 2018, it was not simply adding another red-and-blue bezel to the catalogue; it was restoring the steel Pepsi GMT to the centre of the range after years of careful withholding. The result was a watch that combined the emotional charge of the original GMT-Master idea with Rolex’s most current travel-time calibre, and it immediately became one of the clearest examples of how modern Rolex demand is built: not on novelty alone, but on controlled continuity.

This reference is often discussed as an object of scarcity or resale value, which is understandable but incomplete. The more interesting reading is technical and historical. The 126710BLRO is the first stainless-steel Rolex GMT-Master II to pair a red-and-blue Cerachrom bezel with the calibre 3285 and, at launch, it arrived only on a Jubilee bracelet. That set of choices was deliberate. Rolex did not revive the steel Pepsi by copying the outgoing aluminium-bezel 16710. It rebuilt the watch around ceramic, a longer-power-reserve movement, a more formal bracelet, and a case that still reads as unmistakably GMT-Master II.

From Pan Am Instrument to Ceramic Status Reference

The model’s lineage begins with the GMT-Master reference 6542, launched in 1954 for commercial aviation and closely associated with Pan American World Airways pilots. The defining idea was simple: a 24-hour hand and rotating 24-hour bezel allowed the wearer to read a second time zone. The red-and-blue bezel became functional shorthand, separating daytime and nighttime hours. The later reference 1675, produced from 1959 into the late 1970s, established much of the visual grammar collectors still recognise: crown guards, aluminium insert, Mercedes hands, date with Cyclops, and a long production life full of dial and bezel variation.

The GMT-Master II line began in 1982 with the reference 16760, the so-called “Fat Lady,” powered by calibre 3085 and distinguished by an independently adjustable local-hour hand. That technical change made the watch a proper traveller’s GMT rather than merely a dual-time display. The slimmer 16710 followed in 1989 with calibre 3185, later calibre 3186 near the end of production, and it remains the last steel Pepsi GMT-Master II with an aluminium bezel. In 2007, Rolex moved the steel GMT-Master II into the ceramic era with the black-bezel 116710LN. The blue-black 116710BLNR appeared in 2013. But the ceramic Pepsi was initially reserved for precious metal: the white-gold 116719BLRO of 2014.

That context explains the 126710BLRO’s force on arrival in 2018. Rolex had already proved it could manufacture a two-colour Cerachrom bezel in blue and black, then red and blue, but it waited four years before putting the Pepsi ceramic bezel back into stainless steel. The 126710BLRO was not first because the technology was new; it was first because Rolex judged the market and the product architecture ready. That distinction matters. This was a managed restoration of a core reference, not a spontaneous heritage release.

Case, Bezel, Dial: Familiar Codes, Modern Execution

The 126710BLRO uses a 40 mm Oyster case in Oystersteel, Rolex’s proprietary name for its 904L-family stainless steel. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, the crystal is sapphire with a Cyclops magnifier over the date, and the screw-down Triplock crown is positioned at 3 o’clock. On paper, the dimensions sound conventional. On the wrist, the watch sits in the modern Rolex sports-watch register: broad enough in stance to feel current, but not oversized by contemporary standards. The lug-to-lug measurement is roughly 48 mm, and the case thickness is commonly measured around 12 mm, making it noticeably more wearable than many competing automatic GMT watches with higher cases and thicker midsections.

The bezel is the defining component. The bidirectional 24-hour Cerachrom insert is red for the lower half and blue for the upper half, with engraved numerals and graduations coated in platinum via Rolex’s PVD process. The ceramic insert is more scratch-resistant and colour-stable than the aluminium inserts used on earlier references, but it also changes the character of the watch. Vintage aluminium Pepsi bezels fade, acquire quirks, and sometimes drift into pink, blueberry, or ghost tones. The 126710BLRO is not that kind of object. Its bezel is designed to resist the very ageing effects that drove much of vintage GMT collecting. That is an important trade-off, not a flaw.

The dial is gloss black with Chromalight-filled white-gold hour markers and hands. The green 24-hour hand links the current GMT-Master II family visually, though it is less historically resonant than the red GMT hands of earlier Pepsi references. The dial text is restrained by modern Rolex standards: applied coronet, “Oyster Perpetual Date,” “GMT-Master II,” and the chronometer certification lines. The minute track is precise, the Mercedes hour hand remains, and the date aperture at 3 o’clock retains the brand’s traditional asymmetry. Nothing here is experimental. The strength is in consistency, with enough modern materials to keep the watch from becoming a costume version of the 16710.

The Jubilee Bracelet Was Not an Afterthought

At launch, the 126710BLRO was offered only on the Jubilee bracelet, specifically the reference 69200 bracelet with Oysterlock safety clasp and Easylink comfort extension. This decision divided collectors who expected a steel sports GMT on an Oyster bracelet. It also gave the watch its own identity. The Jubilee softened the visual mass of the Super Case-era GMT profile and made the watch sit flatter and more fluidly on the wrist. Its five-piece-link construction catches more light than the Oyster bracelet, but it also articulates better around smaller wrists.

In 2021, Rolex broadened the option set by making the 126710BLRO available on an Oyster bracelet as well, while keeping the same six-digit reference and distinguishing the configuration through bracelet specification rather than a different case reference. The Oyster version is visually more austere and closer in attitude to the tool-watch lineage of the 16710. The Jubilee version, however, remains the more consequential configuration because it defined the 2018 launch and marked the steel ceramic Pepsi as something distinct from a simple professional-watch revival.

The clasp deserves mention because it is one reason the modern reference wears better than many older GMTs, even if it lacks their lightness. The Oysterlock clasp gives real security, and the Easylink system allows approximately 5 mm of extension without tools. For a travel watch, that matters. Airports, cabins, heat, and changing wrist size are not romantic details; they are exactly the environments where a GMT-Master II is supposed to function. Rolex’s bracelet engineering is often treated as secondary to dial and bezel discussion, but on this model it is central to daily usability.

Calibre 3285: The Real Upgrade Beneath the Closed Back

The most important technical distinction between the 126710BLRO and earlier steel Pepsi GMTs is the calibre 3285. Introduced with this generation of GMT-Master II, the automatic movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses 31 jewels, and offers approximately 70 hours of power reserve. That marks a substantial increase over the calibre 3186, which provided around 48 hours. The difference is not theoretical. A 70-hour reserve allows the watch to be taken off on Friday evening and still be running on Monday morning, a practical benefit that suits a travel watch better than any decorative complication would.

The calibre 3285 incorporates Rolex’s Chronergy escapement, a nickel-phosphorus component made by LIGA processes and designed for improved efficiency and resistance to magnetism. It also uses a blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. The movement is certified first as a Swiss chronometer by COSC and then cased and regulated by Rolex to its Superlative Chronometer standard of -2/+2 seconds per day. The independently adjustable local-hour hand remains the key user interface: the wearer can jump the hour hand forward or backward in one-hour increments without stopping the movement or disturbing the minute and seconds display.

Finishing is where expectations need discipline. The calibre 3285 is not a movement designed to compete with hand-finished haute horlogerie calibres, and Rolex does not pretend otherwise. It sits behind a solid caseback and is finished industrially, with clean machining, functional decoration, and engineering consistency prioritised over visual theatre. That is the correct approach for this watch. The GMT-Master II 126710BLRO is an instrument refined by mass production excellence, not an artisanal movement showcase. Its value proposition rests on robustness, regulation, serviceability, and integration rather than bevelled bridges or black-polished steelwork.

How the 126710BLRO Wears

On wrist, the 126710BLRO is less blunt than its ceramic-bezel predecessors might suggest. The case still has broad lugs compared with five-digit references such as the 16710, but the Jubilee bracelet mitigates the visual width. The watch reads as 40 mm, not as an inflated sports watch. Its balance is particularly strong on wrists in the 6.5 to 7.25 inch range, where the bracelet’s articulation keeps the case centred and reduces top-heaviness. On the Oyster bracelet, the watch feels more solid and linear; on Jubilee, it feels more integrated and less aggressive.

The bezel action is precise, with 24 clicks rather than the 120-click dive-bezel feel found on Submariner models. That is appropriate: the bezel is meant to align with time zones, not elapsed minutes. The independent hour hand makes the watch intuitive during travel. Set the 24-hour hand to home time, jump the local hour hand on arrival, and use the bezel for a third zone if necessary. This is still one of the most coherent mechanical travel-watch interfaces in production, not because it is rare, but because it solves the problem with minimal cognitive friction.

The Pepsi colourway is more complex in ceramic than in aluminium. Depending on light, the red can appear burgundy rather than bright red, and the blue often sits closer to navy than the vivid inserts of older references. Early criticism that the colours were too muted missed the point. Ceramic cannot reproduce aluminium’s porous, painted character, and Rolex wisely avoided making the bezel cartoonish. The 126710BLRO is at its best in indirect daylight, where the bezel has depth without becoming loud. It is not a discreet watch, but it is less showy than its market reputation implies.

Market Position and Collector Behaviour

The 126710BLRO entered the market in 2018 with a U.S. retail price around $9,250. Since then, official pricing has moved upward with Rolex’s annual increases, and the watch has remained difficult to purchase at retail through authorised dealers. On the secondary market, it became one of the clearest symbols of the late-2010s and early-2020s Rolex shortage. Prices rose sharply, with unworn Jubilee examples trading well above $25,000 during the 2021–2022 peak, and in some cases approaching or exceeding $30,000 depending on condition and market timing. By 2023 and 2024, prices had softened but continued to sit materially above retail, often in the low-to-mid $20,000 range for full-set examples.

That premium has shaped how the watch is perceived, sometimes to its detriment. The 126710BLRO is not interesting because it trades above list; it trades above list because it is interesting, constrained, and easy for the wider market to understand. It has the colourway most people associate with the GMT-Master, the modern ceramic construction collectors expect, the calibre 3285, and the Rolex signature of incremental scarcity. The model is liquid because its story is legible. A buyer does not need to understand obscure dial marks or case variations to grasp why this reference matters.

Among collectors, the sharper debate is not whether the 126710BLRO is important, but whether it is the most satisfying Pepsi GMT to own. A vintage 1675 offers history, variation, and patina. A late 16710 offers aluminium charm with modern reliability and a slimmer case. The white-gold 116719BLRO offers precious-metal stealth and the first ceramic Pepsi execution. The 126710BLRO sits between those poles. It is not the most romantic Pepsi, nor the rarest. It is the most complete modern steel expression of the concept, and that is why it has become the default reference point for the contemporary GMT-Master II.

Why This Reference Endures

The endurance of the Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi 126710BLRO is not accidental. It is built from specific decisions: a 40 mm Oystersteel case, a ceramic red-and-blue 24-hour bezel, the calibre 3285 with 70 hours of reserve, an independently adjustable local-hour hand, and bracelet options that let the same reference present in two different registers. The watch connects directly to the 1954 GMT-Master idea without pretending to be a mid-century object. That balance is difficult to achieve, and Rolex is unusually disciplined at it.

The reference also benefits from being genuinely useful. Many modern luxury sports watches borrow professional codes while offering little functional advantage in daily life. The 126710BLRO still earns its complication. It is useful for travel, international calls, distributed work, and anyone who thinks in more than one time zone. Its bezel and hand layout are immediately readable, its movement is robust, and its bracelet adjustment system is practical. None of these qualities requires mythology to justify the watch.

The editorial verdict is straightforward. The 126710BLRO is not the purest GMT-Master ever made; that argument belongs to earlier aluminium-bezel references. It is not the most materially luxurious; white gold and gem-set variants cover that territory. But as a single modern steel GMT-Master II, it is the reference that best captures Rolex’s current strength: historical continuity translated through industrial precision. Its market premium may rise and fall, and collectors should be wary of treating any mass-produced modern watch as a guaranteed asset. The underlying model, however, is not fragile. The 126710BLRO endures because it is the right Rolex complication, in the right colourway, with the right movement, delivered at the moment the market was waiting for it.
